Chapter 29
At 9:58, I was sitting on Connerâs bed, his dresser drawer pulled out and on the bedroom floor with the key ring he gave me and the envelope from under the drawer in my hand. My purse was beside me, as well as a small bag with a hoodie, my phone charger, a water bottle, some granola bars, deodorant, and a change of underwear. I didnât know how long Iâd be gone; I was just told to run.
9:59, and still nothing. No call, no text, no sound outside the building of cars driving by. Of course, like a bloody horror, angst-driven movie, it had started to rain when the sun went down. I peered up out his bedroom window, which looked over the driveway, hoping to see headlights turn in. I stared and hoped and prayed that Conner would come home. He had to come home. He justâ¦
BZZZZZZ
The sound of the alarm I had set on my phone interrupted my panic attack. It was 10:00 on the dot. I grabbed the phone, turned off the alarm and ran up the basement stairs and out to my SUV. I locked myself in and tore open the envelope. Just as Conner said, there was an address, a name and a phone number. I put the address in the GPS and sped out of the parking lot.
I pulled into an old storage unit lot in the middle of nowhere about half an hour later, triple-checking that the address was correct, and drove up to the unit number that was on the piece of paper. I looked at the door for maybe a minute, hyping myself up to do this and not just go to the police, until I reminded myself that Conner had a plan, and if he didnât want me to just go to the cops, there must have been a reason. I had to trust that. I had to trust him.
I took the key ring Conner gave me out of my purse and made my way to the old, rusted bay door. As predicted, the old copper key on the ring fit into the lock on the door. I didnât hesitate to throw the storage unit door open as the rain continued to pelt down on me. Inside, unsurprisingly, since the other key on the ring was a key to a GMC, was a vehicle covered by a dusty tarp. I ripped the tarp off and revealed a truck that looked older than me. Why do I have to use his truck when I have my car?
But after remembering the fear in his eyes after he kissed me, told me he loved me and that he was sorry he dragged me into this and drove off, I stopped questioning him. I grabbed my purse and my bag from my car, threw them into the truck and switched out the vehicles, pulling mine into the storage unit after pulling the old clunker of a truck out and locking the unit back up.
